100 Days to Reconnect with Water Wellness

The Blue Mind Challenge

Each year, from May 26th to September 2nd, you are invited to spend 100 days in, on, and near water.

I have participated this year, and some of you have asked me to share more about the challenge, and what a Blue Mind Life means.

The Blue Mind Challenge, is rooted in a growing understanding of the profound impact water has on our mental and physical well-being. It is an invitation to immerse ourselves in the natural element that covers the majority of our planet and makes up roughly 60% of our bodies, 99% by molecular count. But beyond a physical connection, this challenge offers a path to personal reflection, and a deepened appreciation for the water that sustains all life.

It was born out of the research and philosophy outlined in Wallace J. Nichols' book, published in 2014,  Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do.

Water as a vital component of human wellness.

Nichols, a marine biologist and passionate advocate for water conservation, coined the term "Blue Mind" to describe the mildly meditative state we enter when we're close to water. His work, blending scientific research with personal stories, explores the hypothesis that our brains are wired to respond positively to water, and that time spent in aquatic environments can significantly improve our mental health and cognitive functioning.

Wallace J. Nichols passed away this year, on 10 June 2024, at the age of 57.

The key findings from Nichols' book reveal that water has a uniquely calming effect on the brain. MRI studies and psychological research demonstrate that when we're near water, our brains shift into a different mode, reducing stress and anxiety. The sound of waves, the sight of a flowing river, or even the feel of water on our skin can trigger a deep sense of peace and contentment.

One of Nichols' most compelling arguments is that water not only relaxes us but also makes us more creative, better problem-solvers, and more compassionate. The repetitive patterns found in natural water bodies, like ocean waves or rivers, lull our brains into a state of rest while also stimulating inspiration and new ideas. This is why so many people report feeling their most creative when they're by the beach or in the shower.

Water connects us—to nature, to one another, and to ourselves.

The Blue Mind theory is more than just an intellectual concept—it's a call to action for us to reconnect with the water in our lives, both for our personal well-being and for the health of the planet.

Practices such as Surf Therapy or Ocean Therapy are emerging, to help people reach a calmer state of mind, a sense of belonging and a more positive self-identity.

Wellness Starts with Water: Inside and Out

To me, the essence of the Blue Mind Challenge is simple: wellness begins with water. It is a reminder that the water within us, and the water that surrounds us, are inextricably linked. Our bodies are made up of water, and every cell, tissue, and organ depends on it to function.

The waters of the earth—oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, the water in the air and in each and every cell of your body —are the lifeblood of the world we live in.

The connection between water and wellness is so fundamental that it's easy to overlook.

Many wellness trends today focus on supplements, personal care products, biomarker tracking, gyms, and luxury retreats, but rarely emphasise water beyond your cold plunge.

It is time for a shift in our collective mindset—from one of overconsumption to one of water appreciation.

Wellness through water isn't just about physical health—it's about emotional and spiritual well-being, too. Water teaches us to slow down, to let go of the distractions of daily life, and to be present in the moment. It offers solace in times of stress, and it can provide clarity when we're facing difficult decisions.

Embrace the Blue Mind Challenge 2025

Take a note in your calendars for the next one. Participating in the Blue Mind Challenge is a step toward embracing a more balanced, water-wellness-centered way of life. Our connection with water is a step toward greater wellness. Until then:

  • Cultivate a deep appreciation for the water within us and the water around us.

  • Shift the narrative from overconsumption to appreciation.

  • Engage with water, whether by swimming, paddling, floating, or simply walking along a shoreline.

  • Tap into and protect a source of healing, wellness and renewal that is always available to us.
